How club fitting works

A custom fitting matches the clubs to your swing rather than the other way round. Here's what to expect.

What happens in a fitting

You'll hit shots, usually on a launch monitor, while the fitter adjusts the club's specifications. They read the ball and club data, change one variable at a time, and settle on the combination that gives you the best, most repeatable result.

What gets measured

• Length and lie angle, so the club sits correctly at impact
• Shaft: flex, weight and profile matched to your tempo and speed
• Grip size, for control and hand action
• Loft and head, dialled in for launch and spin

Independent vs brand-owned

A brand-owned centre fits one manufacturer's range, which is ideal if you already know you want that brand. An independent fits across brands and can tell you when a different maker suits you better. Both are legitimate; it just helps to know which you're walking into. Every listing here is labelled.

What to look for in a fitter

• Fitting technology, such as a launch monitor (TrackMan or GCQuad)
• The brands they're certified to fit
• Honest reviews from real golfers
• Whether a fee is refundable against a purchase
